Choosing blank plastic cards for your ID card printer

Every card printer is fussy about what it is fed. A card slightly too thick jams the feeder, a dusty surface leaves white flecks in the print, and a rough core wears the printhead early. The blank card is not the afterthought it looks like: it decides whether a batch of staff IDs comes out clean or streaky.

This is the full range for Irish organisations printing their own ID cards, PVC membership cards and access passes: white PVC in packs of 100 and 500, coloured-core cards in yellow, orange, green, royal blue and light gold, Hi-Co magnetic stripe cards, signature strip cards, self-adhesive cards, slot-punched cards and a recycled white card. Prices start from €13 ex VAT per pack of 100.

Thickness, finish and the details that matter

The standard ID card is 760 micron, the same as a bank card, and most of this range is exactly that. Beyond thickness, the choice is about what the card has to do.

  • A Hi-Co magnetic stripe if the card is swiped for door access, time and attendance or a gym turnstile.
  • A signature strip on the reverse for membership cards the holder signs.
  • Self-adhesive cards at 320 or 400 micron, printed normally and stuck to an existing access fob.
  • A coloured core rather than printed colour, so the edge stays coloured as the card wears.

Matching cards to printers and ribbons

Any 760 micron card here runs in an Evolis, Magicard, Zebra, Fargo, IDP or Entrust printer. Start with blank white cards for plain badges, coloured plastic cards for membership cards that need to stand out, and the magnetic stripe cards or signature strip cards pages for specialist stock. Can I print plastic membership cards on an office printer?

No. PVC cards need a dedicated card printer with dye-sublimation or retransfer ribbons, not an inkjet or laser.

What thickness should I buy for ID cards in Ireland?

760 micron, also written as 30 mil. It fits every card printer, holder and wallet slot, and it is what door readers expect.

Do coloured cards still need a colour ribbon?

Only for a colour photo or logo. A coloured-core card with a black monochrome ribbon gives crisp text on a coloured card at a fraction of the ribbon cost.
