Choosing self-adhesive cards for cards you cannot print on directly

Self-adhesive cards solve a specific problem: you have a card that will not go through your printer, and you still want a photo and a name on it. Thick clamshell proximity cards, older access control fobs in card form, and smart cards with a raised chip all fall into this category. You print the design on a thin self-adhesive card, peel the backing, and stick it to the card you were issued. Irish businesses inheriting an access control system from a previous tenant do this all the time.

The cards here are thin PVC with an adhesive layer on the back, in 320, 400 and 480 micron thicknesses, plus the Magicard M9007-011 ISO CR80 self-adhesive card in packs of 500 for sites that print at volume. Packs of 100 start from €42 ex VAT.

320, 400 or 480 micron: what to look for

  • 320 micron: the thinnest option, adds the least to the host card, but check your printer will feed it; some direct-to-card printers have a minimum thickness.
  • 400 micron: the middle ground that most desktop card printers accept without adjusting the feeder.
  • 480 micron: the sturdiest of the three, easier to handle and align when sticking down by hand.

Printing self-adhesive cards: printers, ribbons and alignment

Any direct-to-card printer whose feed range covers the thickness will print these with its usual ribbon. Keep the design a millimetre or two inside the edge so a slight misalignment when sticking down does not show. The standard 760 micron blank white cards are the right choice where the card can be printed directly, the thin cards collection covers non-adhesive lightweight stock, and other speciality cards gathers the slot-punched, key tag and magnetic stripe variants.

No, the back is the adhesive layer. Print single-sided and, if the host card has a magnetic stripe on the reverse, leave that side uncovered.
