Choosing a lever clip for your ID badges
A lever clip opens with a press of the thumb and springs shut on its own, which sounds like a small thing until you watch a nurse or a security guard take a badge off and put it back on twenty times in a shift. The crocodile clip grips harder; the lever clip is quicker. For staff who move a badge between pocket, lanyard and lapel through the day, quicker wins.
There are three lever clips here, all in packs of 100 and all dispatched from Dublin: the lever clip with a metal popper and 70mm clear strap, the ID card clip with a metal popper strap, and the lever ID card clip with a nylon strap and plastic popper. Prices start from €34 ex VAT per pack.
Strap, popper and grip: what to look for
- The strap. A clear strap shows the card face uninterrupted; a nylon strap is the sturdier choice where badges are handled roughly.
- The popper. A metal popper survives more open-and-close cycles than plastic. A plastic popper keeps the clip lighter and is the usual pick for schools.
- The card. Every strap needs a slot to pass through, either in a slot-punched card or in the holder.
Fitting lever clips to cards and holders
If your cards come straight from the printer without a slot, either order slot-punched cards or put the card in a holder from the ID card holders range, all of which have the slot built in. Staff who swipe at door readers all day are usually better served by a reel from the ID card reels range. For the firmer grip of a crocodile jaw, see crocodile clips, and the full attachment range is under ID card clips. Every pack ships across Ireland.
Frequently asked questions
What is a lever clip on an ID badge?
A spring clip opened by pressing a small lever with the thumb. It releases wide, grips a pocket edge or lapel, and closes on its own when let go.
Lever clip or crocodile clip for ID badges in Ireland?
Crocodile for a firm grip that stays put all day; lever for staff who take the badge on and off repeatedly. Most Irish workplaces standardise on one or the other.
Do these clips work with badge holders?
Yes. The strap threads through the slot in any open-faced, enclosed or vinyl holder and the clip grips clothing as normal.
