Choosing Magicard Ultima ribbons and retransfer film

The Ultima is a retransfer printer, which changes what a ribbon is. A direct-to-card machine prints straight onto the card and needs one ribbon. The Ultima prints onto a clear film first and then bonds that film to the card, so it consumes a dye ribbon and a retransfer film at once. Run out of either and the printer stops.

The Irish organisations running an Ultima chose retransfer for a reason: universities and hospitals printing on contactless chip cards, security teams that want edge-to-edge colour and a tamper-evident finish. There are four consumables here. The HE750 YMCKK is a 750-print colour ribbon with two black panels, for a colour front and black reverse. The HE750 YMCKS is the secure version, with a panel that prints a covert security feature. The HE1000RT is the retransfer film, rated for 1,000 prints. The HE3000S set pairs the YMCKS ribbon with its matching film.

Ribbon and film: what to look for

  • Match the yields. A 750-print ribbon and a 1,000-print film do not run out together, so keep a spare of the shorter one.
  • Secure or standard. YMCKS for cards where forgery is a concern; YMCKK for ordinary staff and student cards.
  • Genuine film. It carries the image and takes the heat, and is not a place to economise. Pricing for all four items is on request by phone.

Cards, cleaning and the rest of the Magicard range

Retransfer prints happily on chip and contactless stock, so look in blank cards for printing, and run a printer cleaning kit at each ribbon change to keep dust off the film. Magicard's other retransfer machine has its own Prima ribbons page, and every other Magicard consumable is under Magicard ribbons. To compare the Ultima against machines of its type, see retransfer printers. All dispatched from Dublin.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Magicard Ultima need both a ribbon and a film?

Because it is a retransfer printer. The colour is printed onto the film, and the film is fused to the card. The ribbon carries the dye; the film carries the image.

What is the difference between YMCKK and YMCKS?

YMCKK has two black panels for a colour front and black back. YMCKS replaces the second black with a security panel that prints a covert feature.

How many cards will one ribbon and one film print?

The HE750 ribbons are rated for 750 prints and the HE1000RT film for 1,000, so over a long run you change ribbons more often than film.
