Choosing student lanyards for a school or college

A student lanyard solves a problem that is mostly about adults. Teachers and reception staff need to tell, across a corridor, who belongs in the building and who does not. Put STUDENT on the lanyard, pair it with a photo ID card, and the identification happens before anyone has to ask. That is why secondary schools, colleges and universities across Ireland have made lanyards for students part of the uniform list.

Breakaway, clip and colour: what to look for

• Breakaway. The purple pack includes a safety breakaway that opens under a sharp pull. For first years, PE corridors and science labs it is the sensible default.
• Clip type. The plastic J clip is light and will not mark a card. The metal lobster clip on the black pack survives more abuse, which counts for something with teenagers.
• Colour. Black is neutral and matches most uniforms. Purple is easier to spot and keeps students visibly distinct from staff on black or navy.

Pairing student lanyards with cards and holders

A student lanyard needs a holder. An open-faced holder keeps the photo visible; a rigid one survives being sat on. Both are in the ID card holders and clips range, and the open-faced ID card holders are the usual choice for school photo IDs. Staff in the same building typically wear a contrasting staff lanyard, with visitor lanyards at reception; every role is under pre-printed lanyards.
