Choosing Evolis Quantum ribbons for high-volume card runs

The Quantum is the Evolis built for volume, the printer a Dublin university or a national membership body runs for a week solid at enrolment time. Ribbons for a machine like that are bought by the thousand prints, not the hundred: 3,000 black prints on one roll, 1,000 white on another. When you are printing a card every few seconds, changing ribbon is the interruption you want least.

The decision is what colour you need the print to be. The R2131 black monochrome is the everyday choice for names, numbers and barcodes on white or light cards. The R2015 white monochrome does the same job on black, navy or coloured cards, where black text would disappear. The R2030 white signature panel ribbon prints a matte white area that can be signed with a pen, which is how membership and loyalty cards get a signature strip without buying pre-printed stock.

The R2131 works out at about 3 cent a card, which is why so many Irish organisations use the Quantum for large plain-text runs and keep a smaller colour printer for photo ID. Ribbons start from €38 ex VAT.

White ribbons need a dark card to show, so pair the R2015 with coloured plastic cards; the black R2131 goes onto standard blank white cards. A printer running 3,000 cards between changes collects dust, and a cleaning kit at every change is the difference between clean text and faint horizontal lines.
