Choosing rigid card holders for ID badges

A flexible vinyl wallet is fine for a visitor pass that lives a day. A staff card that goes through a turnstile, a scrub pocket and a lanyard every day for three years needs something with a spine, which is what a rigid card holder is: a hard plastic frame that keeps a credit-card-sized ID flat, unbent and readable. Irish construction firms, hospitals and warehouses buy these because the card inside costs more than the holder.

The holders here are the BIOBADGE open-faced range, sold in packs of 100 and in ten colours: black, white, red, orange, purple, dark blue, mid blue, light blue, dark green and light green. What to look for: colour, orientation and sides

  • Colour as a signal. Many Irish sites colour-code by role or clearance: white for staff, red for contractors, dark green for first aiders. A coloured frame is visible across a yard in a way a printed stripe is not.
  • Landscape or portrait. Match the holder to the card design, not the other way round.
  • Single or dual sided. Dual-sided leaves both faces visible, which matters for cards with a barcode on the back.
  • Open-faced or enclosed. Open-faced holders let the card slide in and out; the enclosed clear holder seals it, for cards that should not be swapped.
