Choosing manufacturer brand blank cards for your printer

Every card printer manufacturer sells its own blank cards, and the reason is not purely commercial. Evolis, Zebra, Magicard and Fotodek cards are cut, polished and packed to the tolerances their own printheads expect, which means fewer jams and fewer feed errors. For a busy issuing office in Ireland printing hundreds of cards a week, that predictability is worth the slightly higher price over generic PVC.

The range covers the standard 760 micron white card in a Zebra Premier pack of 500, Fotodek Ice White in packs of 100, thin Evolis Badgy cards for the Badgy printers, Evolis matte black and yellow PVC for colour-coded credentials, and Magicard self-adhesive CR80 cards for fixing a printed overlay onto an existing proximity card. Irish schools, gyms and clubs printing their own membership cards will find the job covered by one of these packs.

What to check before you order

  • Thickness: 760 micron (30 mil) is the standard credit-card gauge and suits nearly every direct-to-card printer. The Evolis Badgy cards are thinner and specific to that printer.
  • Finish: glossy white for photo ID; matte black or yellow where the card colour itself carries meaning.
  • Self-adhesive: the Magicard M9007-011 cards are printed, then peeled and pressed onto a clamshell or thick access card that cannot go through the printer.
  • Pack size: 100 for small runs, 500 for anyone printing weekly. Packs start from €33 ex VAT.

Do I have to use my printer manufacturer's own cards?

No. Any 760 micron PVC card of decent quality will print. Manufacturer cards remove one variable if you are chasing a feed problem.

Can I print plastic membership cards for my business on these?

Yes. Load them into any ID card printer and print the design directly; the white and coloured cards here are the usual stock for club membership and loyalty cards in Ireland.

What are self-adhesive cards for?

For access control cards too thick or too valuable to feed through a printer. Print the thin adhesive card, peel the backing and press it onto the fob or clamshell.
