Choosing eco friendly cards for sustainable ID printing

Plenty of Irish organisations now have a procurement line that asks what a card is made of. This range exists for the people writing those policies: universities, councils, hospitals and membership bodies that want the card printer to keep working exactly as before while the card itself changes underneath.

There are three routes here. The Dyestar 50% recycled PVC cards keep the material but halve the virgin plastic. The Dyestar PET core cards swap the core for PET, which is more readily recycled. The Dyestar BIOCARD and Fotodek BIO cards are biodegradable, breaking down at end of life rather than sitting in landfill. All four are 760 micron, white, CR80 size, in packs of 100, and all four print like ordinary card stock.

What to look for in bio and recycled cards

  • How far you need to go: recycled content ticks a sustainability box with no change in card behaviour; biodegradable goes further and suits schemes with a defined card life.
  • Card lifespan: biodegradable cards are designed to break down eventually, so they fit annual memberships and event passes better than a ten-year staff card.
  • Print method: all four suit direct-to-card printers with standard YMCKO ribbons. No special ribbon or setting is required.
  • Cost: packs start from €17 ex VAT, so the eco option is not the expensive one here.
