Choosing blank plastic cards with a signature strip

A signature strip turns a printed card into one the holder has personally endorsed, and membership bodies, credit unions and loyalty schemes across Ireland still rely on them. The strip is a writable panel applied to the back of an otherwise standard CR80 card, so the front prints through your ID card printer as normal and the back takes a biro.

The range splits two ways. Plain signature strip cards, in white from Dyestar and in dark blue, yellow, silver, red, light blue, green, light gold and black matte, cover membership and loyalty. Cards with both a magnetic stripe and a signature strip, in white, red, forest green, light blue, royal blue, light gold and silver, are for schemes where the card is swiped as well as signed: gym access, cashless canteens, staff discount cards.

What to look for in signature strip cards

  • Strip only or strip plus mag stripe: only add the magnetic stripe if something will read it.
  • Lo-co or hi-co: the white mag stripe cards here are lo-co, which suits loyalty and membership readers. Access control readers sometimes demand hi-co, so check before ordering.
  • Price: the Dyestar white cards start from €27 ex VAT per 100; coloured cards are priced on request.

Related card stock and ribbons

If the signature is not needed, the plain magnetic stripe cards and blank white cards are the simpler purchase, and the coloured plastic cards range has the same colours without a strip. All of these print with standard ribbons from printer ribbons and consumables, and the full blank cards for printing collection is the place to compare. For signature strip cards printed with your own artwork, our sister company PopiD handles that work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I print over the signature strip?

No. The strip is on the back and is designed to be written on; print the reverse around it.

Do signature strip cards work in a standard ID card printer?

Yes. They are CR80 size and feed like a normal blank card. If the card also has a magnetic stripe, load it so the stripe faces the correct way for your printer.

Which cards suit signature loyalty cards in Ireland?

The Dyestar white signature strip card for a simple scheme, or the white lo-co magnetic stripe and signature panel card if the loyalty terminal reads a stripe.
