Choosing thin plastic cards for printing

Not every card needs to be as thick as a bank card. A temporary pass, a loyalty card, a plastic business card or a token that lives in a wallet for a week can be a fraction of the standard 760 micron and nobody will notice, except the person paying for the pack. That is the case for thin cards: the same printable PVC surface at a lower cost and a slimmer profile.

Two thicknesses are listed here, both in packs of 100. The Dyestar blank white 250 micron cards are a third of the thickness of a standard ID card, from €13 ex VAT. The white 480 micron cards sit in between, thick enough to feel like a card in the hand but noticeably slimmer than a credit card, from €57 ex VAT.

What to check before printing thin cards

  • Your printer's thickness range. Every card printer lists a minimum card thickness in its manual, and not every feeder will pick up a 250 micron card. Check before you order.
  • The finish. A thin card takes dye-sublimation print as well as a thick one, but it flexes more, so an overlay panel matters for anything handled daily.
  • The holder. A thin card sits loosely in a rigid holder cut for 760 micron; an open-faced or vinyl holder suits it better.

For staff ID, access control and anything with a magnetic stripe, stay with the standard stock under blank white cards.
