Choosing a replacement power supply for an ID card printer
A card printer that will not switch on is, more often than you would expect, a card printer with a tired power supply. The external brick that ships with most desktop ID card printers takes a lot of abuse: it lives on the floor, gets kicked, and eventually the printer starts dropping out mid-print. Replacing the adapter is the first thing to try.
The catch is that these are not interchangeable. Each printer manufacturer specifies a voltage, a current rating and a connector, and a generic adapter that fits the socket can still be wrong on the other two. Irish offices running an Evolis, Magicard, Zebra or Fargo printer bought some years ago are the typical buyers here.
What to check before ordering a printer power adapter
- The label on the existing supply: it states the output voltage and amperage, and both must match.
- The connector: barrel size and polarity vary between brands, and a near miss will not power the printer.
Printers and other accessories
Power supplies sit within the wider ID card printing accessories and supplies range, alongside other accessories and the printer cleaning kits. If the printer itself is at the end of its life, the current Evolis printers, Magicard printers and Zebra printers are listed by brand.
