Choosing a strap clip badge reel for an ID card that gets used all day
The strap on a card holder has a name, though nobody outside the trade uses it. It is a strap clip, sometimes an ID strap: a short loop of clear vinyl with a metal popper that passes through the slot punch in a card and closes on itself. On a badge reel it is the part that touches the card, so it wears first, which is why the reels here come with reinforced straps rather than a bare thread.
Irish hospitals, pharmacies, warehouses and offices with door readers are the main buyers. The reel clips to a belt or pocket, the strap holds the card, and the wearer pulls the card to the reader and lets go. The decision is case against strap. Chrome reels are heavier and take abuse; plastic and carabiner reels are lighter and clip to a bag strap as easily as a belt.
What to look for in an ID card strap and reel
- A popper that closes firmly. Loose poppers drop the card in car parks.
- A strap wide enough to hold a rigid holder as well as a bare card, so one reel serves both.
- A case to match the setting: chrome for clinical and front-of-house work, plastic for stores and sites. Packs of 50, from €51 ex VAT.
Working with clips, holders and cards
A strap clip reel holds any card with a slot punch, and slot punched blank cards are made for it. For cards worn on a pocket rather than reeled, the crocodile clips and lever clips in the ID card clips range do the same job without the cord. The full set of reels is under ID card reels, and holders to protect the card are in ID card holders and clips. All dispatched from Dublin.
Frequently asked questions
What is a card holder strap called?
A strap clip or ID strap. It is a clear vinyl loop with a popper that threads through the slot in a card or holder, the standard fitting on badge reels and crocodile clips across Ireland.
Is a strap clip reel the same as an ID card belt holder?
Near enough. The reel clips to the belt and the strap holds the card, so the card lives at the hip and retracts after each use.
Do you supply personalised badge reels?
Not from this range, which is plain stock. Our sister company PopiD handles printed reels and lanyards.
