Choosing Zebra ZXP Series 9 ribbons and retransfer film

A ZXP Series 9 uses two consumables, and they wear at different rates. The colour ribbon prints the image onto a clear film, and the film is then bonded to the card. When either runs out the printer stops, so the ordering question is not which ribbon but how many of each. The two items here are the ones the printer is built around.

The 800012-445 is the YMCK colour ribbon, rated for 625 prints, from €206 ex VAT. It has no overlay panel because a retransfer printer does not need one: the film is the protective layer. The 800012-601 is the retransfer film, rated for 1,250 prints, from €121 ex VAT. Both are shared between the ZXP Series 8 and 9, so an Irish organisation that upgraded from an 8 can carry its stock across. The arithmetic is two ribbons per film: a Dublin card office printing 2,500 student cards in September gets through four ribbons and two films.

What to look for when stocking a retransfer printer

  • Genuine Zebra ribbon and film. Retransfer depends on the two being matched in width, tension and heat response.
  • Yields. 625 prints per ribbon, 1,250 per film. Order ribbons in pairs.
  • Panel set. YMCK gives full colour with a black panel for text and barcodes; no overlay is needed on a retransfer machine.

Printers, cards and related ribbons

The machine itself is under Zebra ZXP Series 9, with the wider set of retransfer printers there for comparison. The same film and ribbon serve the ZXP Series 8. Zebra's direct-to-card ribbons, including ZXP Series 7 ribbons, are not interchangeable, and everything Zebra makes is under Zebra ribbons. Chip cards for retransfer are in blank cards for printing.

Are ZXP Series 8 and Series 9 ribbons the same?

Yes, the 800012-445 ribbon and 800012-601 film are listed for both. A Series 7 ribbon is a direct-to-card consumable and will not fit.

Do these ribbons work with a ZXP Series 9 with a laminator?

Yes. The laminator uses its own laminate rolls on top of the ribbon and film, so the two items here are unchanged. Ring us for the laminate.
