Choosing a Fargo card printer for ID and badge printing

Fargo card printers are the ones you tend to find in Irish organisations that also run HID access control, because the two share a parent company and the printers are built around personalising HID cards as well as printing them. The range runs from the DTC1250e, a compact direct-to-card badge printer for a small office, through the DTC4250e and DTC1500 for departmental volume, up to the HDP6600 retransfer printer for cards that have to look like a bank card and survive like one.

The decision is the usual one: how many cards, one side or two, and whether the finish needs to be edge-to-edge. DTC models print onto the card surface and leave a thin white border; the HDP6600 prints onto a film that is fused to the card, which gives full-bleed colour and works on contactless cards with an uneven surface.

Ribbons, film and everything that goes with a Fargo printer

Each DTC model has its own YMCKO colour and K monochrome ribbons, and the HDP6600 needs a ribbon and a transfer film, so the Fargo ribbons collection is organised by printer. Which Fargo badge printer is right for a small business?

The DTC1250e. It comes in single and dual-sided versions, takes standard 760 micron cards and is the lowest-priced Fargo card printer in the range.

What is the difference between a Fargo DTC and HDP printer?

DTC is direct-to-card: the printhead prints straight onto the PVC. HDP is high definition printing, Fargo's name for retransfer: the image goes onto a film first and is bonded to the card, giving edge-to-edge print and better results on chip cards.

Do Fargo printers work with HID access control cards?

Yes. Fargo is part of HID, and the printers are commonly used to personalise HID proximity and smart cards. Encoding options depend on the model, so tell us which cards you use.
