Choosing blank plastic cards with a slot or hole punch

A pre-punched card solves a small problem neatly. Rather than sliding a printed ID into a holder, you clip a strap or reel directly to the card, which means one less thing to buy, one less thing to lose and a card that sits flat against the shirt. Irish schools, gyms and event organisers use them for that reason, and because the punch is made before printing, the slot lands in the same spot on every card.

The range covers the two common formats. Slot-punched cards carry a rectangular slot sized for a strap clip or badge reel strap; the 760 micron portrait version has a 3 x 16mm slot central on the short edge. Round-hole cards take a metal ring or a hook clip. There is also a Dyestar card with both a magnetic stripe and a punch slot, for access systems that swipe. Slot and hole punched cards start from €38 ex VAT per pack of 100.

Slot or round hole: what to look for

  • Slot punch. Holds the card square so it does not spin; the standard choice for staff and student ID.
  • Round hole. Suits a split ring, hook or luggage strap; the usual pick for key tags and locker cards.
  • Card thickness. 760 micron is standard credit-card gauge, the thickness most card printers expect.
  • Orientation. A portrait card has the slot on the short edge so it hangs upright.

Can I print on a blank ID card with a hole already punched?

Yes. The cards are punched before printing and load like any other PVC card. Keep the design clear of the slot area so text is not cut through.

Can I punch a slot in a card myself?
