Choosing an ID card printer for a Mac

Design studios, schools and a fair number of Irish startups run entirely on macOS, and most card printer marketing quietly assumes Windows. The printers gathered here are the ones with proper macOS drivers, so a Mac on the reception desk can design and print staff cards without a spare PC in the corner for the purpose.

What to look for in a Mac compatible card printer

  • Driver, not just connection: any printer plugs into a Mac over USB. What matters is a macOS driver from the manufacturer, which every model here has.
  • Design software: check the badge software you plan to use runs on macOS. Some bundled Windows applications do not, and a driver alone does not design a card.
  • Single or dual-sided: the Magicard 300 Dual-Sided and the Primacy 2 Duplex print the reverse automatically; the rest are single-sided.
  • Volume: the Pronto100 and Zenius Classic suit a few cards a week. The Smart 51, Magicard 300 and Primacy 2 are built for steady departmental use.
