Choosing ribbons for the Fargo HDP5600

The Fargo HDP5600 is a retransfer printer, and that changes what a ribbon is. Rather than printing straight onto the card, it prints onto a clear film which is then bonded to the card surface. So the colour ribbon it uses has no overlay panel and no black resin panel: the 084510 YMC ribbon listed here carries yellow, magenta and cyan only, and is rated for 750 images.

That suits the way HID Fargo retransfer printers are bought by Irish card offices. They go where photographs are printed onto contactless smart cards, and a direct-to-card printhead would skip over the chip and leave a blank patch. A Dublin university or a hospital issuing access-controlled staff ID gets edge-to-edge colour and a card that survives years on a lanyard.

What to budget for

  • Colour ribbon: Fargo 084510 YMC, 750 images, €297 ex VAT, so roughly 40c per image before film.

Why is the 084510 ribbon YMC rather than YMCKO?

Because on a retransfer printer the bonded film does the job of the overlay panel, so no O is needed. This ribbon builds black from the colour panels; HDP ribbons with a separate black panel are listed under Fargo ribbons.

Do I need transfer film as well as the ribbon?

Yes. Every card uses a length of film and a set of ribbon panels; run out of either and the printer stops.
