Choosing blank magnetic stripe cards for your printer

A magnetic stripe is still the cheapest way to put machine-readable data on a plastic card, which is why Irish gyms, hotels, car parks and loyalty schemes keep buying them. The card prints like any other blank; the stripe is encoded by the printer, if it has a mag encoder, or by a separate desktop encoder.

The decision that matters is coercivity. Hi-Co stripes take more energy to write and are harder to erase by accident, which suits access control and membership. Lo-Co stripes are cheaper to encode and fine for short-life cards such as hotel keys. Your encoder must match the stripe type.

Hi-Co or Lo-Co, and what else is on the card

Printing and encoding magnetic stripe cards in Ireland

Without an encoder you can print the face and encode the stripe elsewhere; several printers in the Evolis range are available with an ISO HiCo/LoCo encoder built in. For cards without a stripe, the blank white cards and coloured plastic cards cover the same stock, and the signature strip cards suit a handwritten element without encoding. What is the difference between Hi-Co and Lo-Co magnetic stripe cards?

Hi-Co stripes are encoded at a higher field strength, so they resist erasure and are the norm for access control. Lo-Co stripes are cheaper to encode and used for hotel keys and gift cards.

Do I need a magnetic stripe card printer to use these cards?

No. Any ID card printer prints the face; encoding the stripe needs an encoder module in the printer or a standalone encoder.

Can I print on both sides of a magnetic stripe card?

Yes, but keep the design away from the stripe. Most design templates mask that area.
