Choosing crocodile clips for ID badges and card holders
Not everyone wants a lanyard. Nurses, kitchen staff, warehouse operatives and anyone working around machinery often prefer an ID card clipped to a pocket or lapel, where it cannot swing into a patient, a pan or a moving part. The crocodile clip is the fitting that makes that possible: a sprung metal or plastic jaw that grips fabric on one side and holds the card holder on the other.
The decision is how the clip attaches to the card. A clip with a 70mm clear strap loops through the slot in a card holder and fastens with a popper, so the holder can be swapped without touching the clip. A self-adhesive pad sticks directly to the card or holder, quicker but permanent. Most Irish workplaces standardise on one approach.
What to look for in a badge clip
- Metal or plastic jaw. Metal grips harder and outlasts plastic on a uniform washed weekly; plastic is lighter, cheaper and kinder to delicate fabric.
- Pin backup. Several clips add a safety pin behind the jaw, so the badge can be pinned to a jumper or lab coat with no pocket edge to grip.
- All-in-one. The combi clip badge holder builds the clip into a holder with a 90x60mm insert, one part instead of two.

Clips, straps, reels and the holders they attach to
A crocodile clip is one of three common badge fittings. Compare it with the lever clip, which presses open with a thumb, and the strap clip, the plain loop used with badge reels. Clips with straps need a slotted holder, so pair them with vinyl holders, or browse every fitting under ID card clips.
Frequently asked questions
Are crocodile clips and alligator clips the same thing?
Yes. Alligator clip is the same sprung-jaw fitting under another name. In Ireland the trade calls them crocodile clips, and searches for alligator clip badge reels land on these products.
Self-adhesive or strap: which should I order?
Strap if you want to swap holders or cards without replacing the clip. Self-adhesive if you want the fastest fitting and do not mind it being permanent.
Do I still need a card holder with a clip?
With a strap clip, yes: the strap loops through a slotted holder. A self-adhesive clip can stick to the card itself, though a holder protects the print.
