Choosing the IDP Smart 21S for small-run ID cards

Not every organisation needs a printer that can run off five hundred cards before lunch. A sports club issuing membership cards, a small school, a clinic replacing the odd lost badge: these are the buyers the IDP Smart 21S was made for. It is the single-sided model at the foot of the IDP Smart range, and it sits there for exactly that reason.

Two versions are listed here. The IDP Smart 21S is the standard single-sided card printer, and the IDP Smart 21R is the rewritable version, which erases and reprints the same card rather than consuming a ribbon. Both are priced on request; ring 01 555 5555 for a current quote.

Smart 21S or Smart 21R: which to choose

  • Choose the 21S for permanent cards: staff ID with a photo, membership cards, anything that will be carried for a year or more.
  • Choose the 21R for cards that change constantly: visitor passes, temporary contractor badges, daily hot-desk cards. The same rewritable card is wiped and printed again, so there is no ribbon to buy.
  • Either way, the printer is single-sided. If your cards need a printed back, step up to the Smart 31.

Ribbons, cards and the rest of the IDP range

The Smart 21S takes the ribbons under Smart 21 ribbons and prints on standard 760 micron cards from the blank white cards range. The Smart 21R needs rewritable cards and no ribbon at all; the rewriteable card printers page explains that approach across every brand. What is a rewritable ID card printer?

A printer that uses heat to erase and reprint a special rewritable card many times over. No ribbon is used, so the running cost is the cards alone.

Can the Smart 21S print both sides of a card?

Only by turning the card by hand and printing again. For regular double-sided cards, look at the dual-sided models in the IDP Smart 31 range.
