Choosing a Magicard Prima retransfer printer

The Prima is the Magicard for organisations that have outgrown direct-to-card printing, and the difference is visible on the card. A retransfer printer prints the image onto a clear film, then bonds that film to the card under heat, so the print runs right to the edge, the colours sit under a protective layer, and the uneven surface of a contactless or MIFARE card no longer matters. Universities, hospital groups and access control integrators across Ireland specify retransfer for exactly those reasons.

Four models are listed. The Prima 801 Uno is single-sided; the Prima 802 Duo prints both sides in one pass. The Prima 451 Laminator Uno and Prima 452 Laminator Duo add an inline laminator, applying a further protective layer for cards expected to be swiped, tapped and pocketed daily for years: staff access cards, student cards, licences. The laminator question is the expensive one: will these cards be in daily contact with readers and pockets for more than a couple of years? If so, lamination pays for itself in cards you do not reissue.

Ribbons, films and the wider Magicard range

The Prima uses its own ribbon and retransfer film, listed under Prima ribbons. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Uno and Duo on a Magicard Prima?

Uno is single-sided, Duo is dual-sided. The Duo prints the reverse in the same job.

Do I need the laminator version?

Only for cards that must survive years of daily use, such as access cards and licences. For visitor and short-term cards, the 801 or 802 without a laminator is the sensible choice.

Will the Prima print on contactless cards?

Yes. Retransfer printing is the standard method for contactless and MIFARE cards because the film bridges the slightly uneven surface over the chip and antenna.
