Choosing a Zebra ZXP Series 1 ribbon for a small card office

The ZXP Series 1 was Zebra's entry point for a long time, and a good many are still working away in Irish schools, clubs and small businesses that print a few dozen cards a month. The ribbon for it is a single item, the 800011-140 YMCKO colour ribbon, rated for 100 prints, from €45 ex VAT.

The question for a Series 1 owner is rarely which ribbon, since there is only one colour option, but how many to keep. A 100-print ribbon suits the way the printer is used: a club printing membership cards after the AGM, a school issuing staff badges at the start of term, a Dublin shop printing loyalty cards on demand. The YMCKO panel set gives full colour on one side with an overlay to protect the print, and since the Series 1 is single-sided there is no need for a second black panel.

What to check before ordering a ZXP Series 1 ribbon

  • The part number. 800011-140 is the Series 1 ribbon. It is not the same as the ZXP Series 3 ribbon and will not fit a ZC100.
  • Yield. 100 prints per ribbon, one set of YMCKO panels per card. If you print 300 cards a year, three ribbons cover it.
  • Storage. Keep spares sealed and out of sunlight; ribbon film does not like heat.

Cards, cleaning and newer Zebra models

A Series 1 prints on standard PVC, so any pack from blank white cards will do, and a cleaning kit at each ribbon change keeps the head clear. If you run a Series 3 instead, its ribbons are under ZXP Series 3 ribbons. When the Series 1 eventually retires, the Zebra ZC100 is its natural successor, with its own ZC100 ribbons.
