# What's in an ID Card Printer Bundle? A Buyer's Checklist
Printer bundles are the most popular way to buy an ID card printer — and for good reason. You get the printer plus everything you need to start printing cards, in one box, at a price that's usually cheaper than buying each component separately.
But bundles vary. Quite a lot, actually. What looks like a bargain on the surface might be missing a key component, or include a ribbon that prints far fewer cards than you'd expect. Here's what to look for — and what to ask about — before you commit.
What a Typical Bundle Includes
Most printer bundles contain some combination of the following:
1. The Printer
This is the obvious part, but check the specifics. Is it single-sided or dual-sided? Does it include an encoding module? Is it the current model or a previous generation being cleared? None of these are necessarily problems — a single-sided printer is perfectly fine if you don't need double-sided cards — but you want to know what you're getting.

2. A Colour Ribbon
Almost every bundle includes at least one ribbon. This is where you need to pay attention to the details.
YMCKO — the standard full-colour ribbon. The letters stand for Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, blacK, and Overlay. This prints a full-colour image plus a thin protective overlay on one side of the card. This is what you want for photo ID cards. YMCKOK — the dual-sided version. Same colour panels, plus an additional black panel for printing on the reverse side. You need this if your printer is dual-sided and you want to print on both sides in a single pass. Mono (K only) — a single-colour ribbon, usually black. This is for text-only printing — barcodes, serial numbers, simple text. If you need full-colour photo cards and the bundle includes a mono ribbon, that's not going to work. You'll need to buy a colour ribbon separately. Ribbon yield also matters. A typical YMCKO ribbon prints 200 to 300 cards, depending on the brand. Some bundles include a full-yield ribbon; others include a "starter" ribbon with a lower yield — sometimes as few as 100 prints. 3. Blank Cards
Most bundles include a box or partial box of blank white PVC cards. Check the quantity — it ranges from 100 to 500 depending on the bundle.
Also check whether the cards are standard PVC or composite (PVC/PET). Both work fine for basic ID cards. Composite cards are slightly more durable and are recommended by some printer manufacturers, but for most use cases the difference is marginal.
If you're printing on technology cards (access control, smart cards), the blank cards in the bundle probably aren't what you need — they'll be plain white cards without any embedded chip. You'll need to buy compatible access control cards separately.

4. ID Card Software
This is where bundles diverge most. Some include full-featured design software with database integration, batch printing, and barcode generation. Others include a "lite" version with basic design tools and single-card printing. Some include no software at all.
If the bundle lists software, check:
- Is it the full version or a trial/lite edition? Lite versions typically limit the number of card designs you can save, or restrict features like database linking and batch printing.
- Does it include a licence key? Some bundles reference software that's downloadable but requires a separate licence purchase.
- What platform does it run on? Most ID card software is Windows-only. If you're on a Mac, check compatibility — or look at Mac-compatible printers that have their own driver solution.

5. A Cleaning Kit
A good bundle includes a starter cleaning kit — at minimum, a cleaning card and a cleaning roller. Some include a more complete kit with swabs and an IPA pen for printhead maintenance.

What's Sometimes Missing
These items aren't always included, and they're easy to overlook:
USB Cable
Surprisingly, not every bundle includes a USB cable. Some printers ship with one in the box; others assume you'll use a network connection. If you're planning a USB setup, confirm the cable is included — or have one to hand.
Network Cable or Wireless Setup
If you want the printer on your network (Ethernet or Wi-Fi), check whether the printer model supports it and whether any additional adapters are needed. Some printers have Ethernet built in; others offer it as an add-on module.
Lanyards and Card Holders
Bundles focused on the printer and consumables rarely include lanyards or holders. If you're setting up a complete ID card system, you'll need card holders and lanyards as well. Budget for these separately.
A Second Ribbon
One ribbon prints 200 to 300 cards. If you're issuing cards for more people than that, you'll run out mid-project. Having a second ribbon on hand avoids the pause while a replacement ships. Check our range of ribbons by brand.
Bundle Value: Is It Actually Cheaper?
Usually, yes — sometimes significantly. Manufacturers and suppliers put bundles together specifically to offer a discount over buying each component individually. The savings vary, but 10-20% off the combined individual prices is common.
To check, price out each component separately:
1. Printer (standalone price)
2. Ribbon (per-unit price for the specific type included)
3. Blank cards (price per box at the included quantity)
4. Software (retail price, if included)
5. Cleaning kit (if included)
Add those up and compare to the bundle price. If the bundle saves you money and includes everything you need, it's a straightforward decision. If it's only marginally cheaper but includes a ribbon type or software edition you'd have to replace anyway, buying separately might make more sense.
Questions to Ask Before Buying
A quick checklist to run through before you commit to a bundle:
- Single or dual-sided? Match this to your actual needs — don't overpay for dual-sided if you only print one side, but don't underbuy if you need both.
- What ribbon type is included? YMCKO for colour, YMCKOK for dual-sided colour, mono for text-only. Make sure it matches what you need.
- What's the ribbon yield? Full yield (200-300 cards) or starter yield (100 cards)?
- How many blank cards? And are they the right type for your use case?
- What software is included? Full, lite, trial, or none?
- Is a cleaning kit included?
- Is a USB or network cable included?
- Is it the current model? Previous-generation bundles can be good value, but check that ribbons and parts are still in production.
