Choosing the Entrust Sigma DS1 for single-sided ID cards

Most organisations print one side of a card and leave the back blank, and for them a duplex printer is money spent on a feature that never runs. The Entrust Sigma DS1 Simplex is the single-sided entry to the Sigma range, from the company that was Datacard, built for the school office, the clinic reception and the small business that needs staff cards printed properly without a large machine on the desk. It is priced at €1,692 ex VAT.

Irish buyers tend to come to the Sigma DS1 from two directions. Some have run an older Datacard printer for years and want the same brand again. Others are printing their first cards and want a machine that will still be printing cleanly in five years. Both are reasonable reasons.

What to look for when comparing Entrust printers

  • Sides. The DS1 is simplex only. If cards need a printed back, look at the duplex models further up the Sigma range.
  • Volume. A single-sided desktop printer suits organisations issuing cards in the hundreds a year rather than the thousands.
  • Encoding. If the cards will open doors, check the encoding options on the higher Sigma models before settling on the DS1.
