Choosing an Entrust Sigma DS2 for your organisation

The Entrust Sigma DS2 is the printer Entrust designed for the card office that wants to issue from a browser rather than from one particular PC. Irish colleges, hospitals and local authorities that already run Entrust software tend to go straight to it; so do organisations that have outgrown an entry-level desktop printer.

Two versions are listed here: the Sigma DS2 single-sided printer and the Sigma DS2 Duplex, part number 525301-005, which prints both faces in one pass. The single-sided model is priced from about €1,799 ex VAT and the Duplex from about €2,250. The difference is the flipper module; the decision is whether the back of your card carries print.

Single-sided or duplex: what to look for

  • Single-sided DS2: staff ID with a photo, name and logo on the front and a blank or pre-printed back.
  • Duplex DS2: adds terms of use, emergency contacts or a barcode on the reverse without a second pass. Worth it as soon as anyone is turning cards over by hand.
  • Both take the same card stock and consumables, so a site can start single-sided and keep the same ribbons if it later adds a Duplex.

Ribbons, bundles and the rest of the Entrust range

The DS2 uses Entrust's YMCKT colour ribbons, where the T is a topcoat panel that seals the print; the correct cartridges are under Sigma DS2 ribbons, with the full brand range under Entrust Datacard ribbons. What is the difference between the Entrust Sigma DS2 and the Sigma DS3?

The DS3 is the larger, faster model in the Sigma family for higher volumes and more encoding options. The DS2 covers most staff and student card programmes at a lower price.

Does the Entrust card printer need special software?

No. The Sigma range works with standard card design software through a driver, and Entrust also offers browser-based issuance tools.

Can the Sigma DS2 encode magnetic stripe or smart cards?

Encoding is an option on the Sigma platform rather than standard on the models listed here. Tell us which cards your access control system uses and we will confirm the configuration.
