Choosing an Evolis Primacy 2 ID card printer

The Primacy 2 is the printer Irish organisations tend to arrive at once a starter machine stops keeping up: the school that has grown past a few hundred students, the hospital department issuing staff badges every week, the club renewing memberships every January. The range here covers Simplex (single-sided) and Duplex (dual-sided) models in Expert and Wireless configurations, plus a Duplex Expert fitted with a HiCo/LoCo 3-track magnetic stripe encoder.

The first decision is sides. A Simplex model prints the front only, which suits a photo ID with a name and logo. A Duplex model prints both faces in one pass, so emergency contacts, terms or a barcode can live on the back without anyone feeding the card twice. Evolis Primacy 2 printers start from €1,755 ex VAT; the 25th Anniversary Bundle is priced on request by phone.

Expert, Wireless or magnetic stripe: which Primacy 2 printer

The differences come down to connection and encoding.

  • Simplex Expert and Duplex Expert: the standard wired configuration, the kind of printer that sits beside a reception PC and quietly gets on with it.
  • Simplex Wireless and Duplex Wireless: the same printer without the cable, useful where the card office is nowhere near a network point.
  • Duplex Expert with Mag ISO HiCo/LoCo 3-Track Encoder: adds magnetic stripe encoding for door readers, canteen or library systems that still read a swipe.

Ribbons, cards and keeping a Primacy 2 running

A card printer is only as good as what you feed it. Evolis Primacy 2 ribbons cover full-colour and monochrome printing, and blank white PVC cards or magnetic stripe cards complete the setup.
