Choosing an Evolis Quantum 2 for card production at volume

Some organisations do not print ID cards, they manufacture them. A university intake in September, a loyalty scheme relaunch, a transport operator re-issuing every pass on the network: jobs measured in thousands of cards, where a desktop printer reloaded every hundred cards becomes the bottleneck. The Evolis Quantum 2 exists for that job. It is a production printer, built to be loaded, started and left to run.

In Ireland the buyers are third-level institutions, bureaus issuing cards for clients, membership bodies and public organisations. The model here ships with a standard ISO magnetic stripe encoder and a smart contact station, and is contactless ready, so one run can print, encode a mag stripe and personalise a chip. Pricing starts from €6,390 ex VAT. The decision, frankly, is whether you have the volume: low hundreds a year and a Primacy 2 will serve you for far less; thousands, or bursts that would tie up a desktop for days, and the Quantum 2 pays for itself in operator time.

What to look for in a high-volume card printer

  • Encoding on board: magnetic stripe, contact chip and contactless personalisation in one pass.
  • Unattended running, with hoppers sized so an operator loads a batch and walks away.
  • Spares you can hold. The Quantum production pack and backup pack are the kits Evolis specifies for the standard version; one on the shelf avoids a halted run.
