Choosing the Fargo HDP6600 for high-volume ID

The HDP6600 is the current HID Fargo retransfer printer, and it is the machine a card office buys when it has outgrown direct-to-card. It prints onto a film that is then bonded to the card, which gives edge-to-edge colour, a tougher finish, and clean output on contactless smart cards where the chip would trip up a conventional printhead. For an Irish university, a hospital group or a Dublin corporate campus issuing access-controlled staff ID, that is the point.

Two versions are listed: single-sided at €3000 ex VAT, and dual-sided at €3800 ex VAT. The dual-sided model turns the card automatically and prints the reverse in the same job, which is the version most organisations end up wanting once the back of the card carries a barcode or a return address.

Single-sided or dual-sided

  • Single-sided, €3000 ex VAT: photo ID with a blank or pre-printed reverse.
  • Dual-sided, €3800 ex VAT: anything with printed terms, a barcode or a second language on the back.
  • Either way, budget for two consumables: a colour ribbon and the transfer film, which run out at different rates.

Consumables and related printers

Ribbons and film for this printer are under Fargo HDP6600 ribbons, and it prints on 760 micron blank white cards. If you are comparing it against the previous generation, the Fargo HDP5000e is still listed, and the wider retransfer printers collection sets it alongside the Zebra, Evolis and Magicard equivalents. The full brand range is under Fargo card printers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Fargo HDP6600 and HDP5000?

Both are retransfer printers. The HDP6600 is the current model and the HDP5000e its predecessor; if you are buying new, the 6600 is the one to price first.

Does the HDP6600 print on smart cards?

Yes. Because the image is printed on film and bonded to the card, the slight bump over an embedded chip does not cause the dropouts a direct-to-card printer produces.

How much does a Fargo HDP6600 cost in Ireland?

€3000 ex VAT single-sided or €3800 ex VAT dual-sided. Encoding options change the figure, so call for a configured quote.
