Choosing an Evolis Avansia for high-security cards

There is a point where a direct-to-card printer stops being enough. The cards must last years rather than months, carry a contactless chip whose antenna makes the surface uneven, or look like a national ID rather than a gym pass. That is the Avansia's territory. It is Evolis's retransfer printer: the image is printed onto a clear film and then fused to the card under heat, so the print runs edge to edge and sits under a layer that shrugs off wear.

The Avansia Expert is listed here at €4,895 ex VAT, with a second listing priced on request by phone. Irish universities, government bodies and large employers are the usual buyers, and it is a printer to choose deliberately rather than by default.

Retransfer or direct-to-card: what to look for

  • Card life. Retransfer film protects the image, so a card that is tapped on a reader fifty times a day still reads cleanly after years. Direct-to-card prints wear at the edges first.
  • Card surface. Contactless and composite cards are hard to print directly because the surface is not flat. Retransfer does not care, because the film takes the image first.
  • Edge-to-edge print. Direct-to-card leaves a thin white border. Retransfer prints over the whole card, which is what a full-bleed design needs.
  • Cost per card. The film is an extra consumable, so each card costs more. That is the trade-off.
