Choosing the right Zebra printer ribbon

Zebra makes two quite different kinds of printer, and this page stocks ribbons for both. The card printers, the ZC and ZXP families found on reception desks across Ireland, take cartridge ribbons such as the 800300-250EM ZC YMCKO (200 prints), the 800350-301EM black monochrome (2,000 prints) and the 800350-264EM SrDYMCKO colour ribbon (200 prints). The label and barcode printers take thermal transfer rolls: wax, wax/resin and resin ribbons in widths from 40mm to 220mm and lengths of 74m, 300m, 450m and 600m.

For ID cards the decision is colour or black. YMCKO prints full-colour photo ID with a protective overlay; the black monochrome ribbon prints ten times as many cards for text, barcodes and visitor passes. For labels the decision is what the label has to survive, which is where wax, wax/resin and resin come in. Zebra ribbons start from €50 ex VAT.

Match the ribbon width to the printhead, not the label: a ribbon narrower than the head leaves it unprotected. The 03200GS06407 64mm and 03200GS08407 84mm wax/resin rolls are the two most asked-for widths in that series, and 110mm covers the common four-inch printers.

What is the difference between wax and resin Zebra ribbons?

Wax is economical and prints well on paper labels but scuffs easily. Resin bonds to synthetic labels and resists chemicals and abrasion. Wax/resin sits in between for coated labels.
