Choosing a Zebra ZXP Series 7 printer

The Zebra ZXP Series 7 is the direct-to-card printer Zebra built for organisations that print in volume rather than in ones and twos: a university card office in Dublin, a hospital HR department, a manufacturer issuing contractor passes across several Irish sites. It sits above the ZC300 in the range and below the retransfer ZXP Series 9, which is where most mid-sized card programmes land.

It comes in two configurations. The single-sided printer, from €2200 ex VAT, prints the face of the card. The dual-sided version, €2700 ex VAT, turns the card and prints the reverse in the same pass, which is where a barcode, emergency number or return address normally lives. The €500 step is cheaper than hand-feeding every card twice for the life of the printer.

What to look for in a ZXP Series 7

  • Sides: single for photo ID with a blank reverse; dual for anything with printed terms, barcodes or a second language on the back.
  • Encoding: if your access control reads magnetic stripe or contactless cards, raise it before ordering rather than after.
  • Volume: the Series 7 is a volume printer. If you print a dozen cards a week, the ZC100 or ZC300 will do the job for less.

Ribbons, cards and alternatives

The printer takes its own ribbon family, listed under ZXP Series 7 ribbons, and prints on 760 micron blank white cards. For a smaller office the Zebra ZC300 is the sensible step down, and for edge-to-edge printing on smart cards the ZXP Series 9 is the retransfer step up. The full brand range is under Zebra card printers, and printer bundles add the first ribbons and cards.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Zebra ZXP Series 7 single or dual-sided?

Both versions are available. The single-sided model is €2200 ex VAT and the dual-sided model €2700 ex VAT; further configurations are priced on request.

What is the difference between the ZXP Series 7 and ZXP Series 9?

The Series 7 is direct-to-card: the printhead prints straight onto the card. The Series 9 is retransfer, printing onto a film that is bonded to the card for edge-to-edge coverage. The 9 costs more and suits smart cards better.

Which ribbon does the ZXP Series 7 use?

Its own ZXP Series 7 ribbons, in colour and monochrome. ZC series and ZXP Series 9 ribbons are not the same part.
