Choosing ribbons and film for the Zebra ZXP Series 8
The ZXP Series 8 is a retransfer printer, and retransfer changes what you buy. The printer lays the image onto a clear film with the 800012-445 YMCK colour ribbon, then bonds that film onto the card, so there are two consumables on this page and the machine needs both: the YMCK ribbon at 625 prints and the 800012-601 retransfer film at 1,250 prints. Both are labelled for the ZXP Series 8 and 9, which is why the part numbers carry 8/9 on the box.
The reason Irish universities, government offices and hospitals go to the trouble is edge-to-edge print over the whole card, chip and all, and an image that sits under the film rather than on the surface. There is no O panel on the ribbon because the film is the overlay. ZXP Series 8 consumables start from €121 ex VAT.

One film roll covers two ribbons on single-sided work, which makes the reorder arithmetic simple: two ribbons per film. Dual-sided cards draw on both at twice the rate, so budget by sides printed rather than by cards.
Cards, related ribbons and the Series 9
Retransfer printing is tolerant of card surfaces, so standard blank white cards print cleanly and so do most chip and contactless cards. Does the ZXP Series 8 need a ribbon and a film?
Yes. The 800012-445 YMCK ribbon prints onto the 800012-601 retransfer film, and the film is then fused to the card. Run out of either and the printer stops.
Are ZXP Series 8 and Series 9 ribbons the same?
The two products here are labelled for Series 8/9, so they fit both. Check the part number on the box against your printer before ordering.
Why is there no overlay panel on the YMCK ribbon?
Because the retransfer film does that job. The printed image is sandwiched under the film, which is why retransfer cards resist wear better than direct-to-card prints.
