# Can You Print Photos on Access Control Cards?

Short answer: yes. You can absolutely print a full-colour photo, name, job title — whatever you need — directly onto an access control card. One card, two jobs: visual identification and electronic access.

It's a common setup in offices, schools, hospitals, and anywhere else that needs both "prove who you are at a glance" and "tap to get through the door." But there are a few things worth understanding before you set it up.

How It Works

An access control card has a chip or antenna embedded inside the plastic. That chip handles the electronic side — storing credentials, communicating with readers, granting or denying access.

The surface of the card is still printable plastic. A card printer applies your design (photo, name, logo, whatever) to that surface using a colour ribbon, exactly the same way it would print on a plain blank card.

The two functions are independent. The chip does its thing, the printed surface does its thing. They don't interfere with each other — provided you use the right printer and the right cards.

What You Need

A Compatible Card Printer

Not every card printer can handle access control cards. The key distinction is the printing technology:

  • Direct-to-card (DTC) printers work well with smooth-surface smart cards. Most 13.56 MHz cards (like MIFARE and HID iCLASS) have a smooth enough surface for DTC printing. However, some older 125 kHz proximity cards have a slightly uneven surface where the antenna coil sits, which can cause print quality issues.
  • Retransfer printers are the safer bet for access control cards across the board. They print onto a film first, then fuse that film over the entire card surface. This handles uneven surfaces without any issues and gives you true edge-to-edge printing.

If you're printing on technology cards regularly, a retransfer printer is worth the investment. For occasional runs on smooth smart cards, a decent DTC printer will manage fine.

The Right Blank Cards

This is where it gets specific. You need blank cards that match your access control system and are compatible with your printer.

  • HID cards — for HID access control systems (iCLASS, Prox, Seos)
  • MIFARE cards — widely used in Ireland for access control and cashless payments
  • Blank white cards — if you're using standalone card printing without embedded technology

The card needs to be CR-80 size (standard credit card dimensions) and PVC or composite — which covers the vast majority of access control cards on the market.

Encoding Capability (Optional but Useful)

Some card printers have built-in encoders that can write data to the card's chip at the same time as printing the visual design. One pass through the printer, and the card comes out fully programmed and printed.

This is a significant time-saver if you're issuing cards in any volume. Without an encoder, you'd need to print the card in one step and then programme the chip separately using your access control system's enrolment station.

What About Pre-Programmed Cards?

Many access control systems use cards that arrive pre-programmed from the factory — Paxton Net2 cards are a common example in Ireland. The unique ID is already written to the chip before the card reaches you.

You can still print on these. The pre-programmed chip data isn't affected by the printing process. Just load them into your printer and print your design as normal. The chip keeps its existing credentials.

This is actually a common workflow: buy pre-programmed cards in bulk from your access control supplier, then print names and photos on them in-house as you issue them to staff.

DTC vs Retransfer: Which Should You Choose?

For most organisations printing on access control cards:

  • DTC is fine if you're using smooth 13.56 MHz smart cards (MIFARE, HID iCLASS SE) and don't need edge-to-edge printing. It's cheaper and faster.
  • Retransfer is the better choice if you're printing on mixed card types, need edge-to-edge coverage, or want the highest possible print quality on technology cards.

The Bureau Alternative

If you don't print cards often enough to justify owning a printer — or if you need a large initial batch and then only occasional replacements — a print bureau service is worth considering. You supply the card design and data, they print and encode the cards, and ship them to you.
