# The Most Common ID Card Printer Faults and How to Fix Them

Your printer's acting up and you've got a stack of cards to produce. We know the feeling. Before you start googling replacement printers, most common faults have straightforward fixes you can try yourself.

Here are the issues we see most often — and what to do about each one.

1. Lines or Streaks on Printed Cards

This is probably the single most common complaint we hear. You print a card and there's a visible line — usually running the full length of the card, always in the same spot.

What's happening: Almost always a dirty or damaged printhead. Dust, debris, or dried ribbon residue sits on one of the printhead's heating elements and creates a consistent streak. Fix it:
  • Run a cleaning cycle using a cleaning kit. Use the cleaning cards that came with your printer — or grab replacements from us. These are pre-saturated cards that run through the printer and clean the printhead and rollers in one pass.
  • If cleaning doesn't shift it, try an isopropyl alcohol cleaning pen directly on the printhead. Be gentle — the printhead surface is delicate.
  • Still there after cleaning? The printhead may be scratched or worn. That's a replacement job.
Prevention: Clean your printer every time you change the ribbon. It takes 30 seconds and saves you from most printhead issues.

2. Ribbon Breaks or Tears

You hear a snap or the printer throws an error mid-print. The ribbon inside has torn.

What's happening: This can be caused by a few things — ribbon tension issues, using the wrong ribbon for your printer model, a card surface that's too rough, or cards with dust and debris on them. Fix it:
  • Open the printer, carefully remove the ribbon cassette, and reseat it. Make sure it's loaded correctly with no slack.
  • Check you're using the correct ribbon for your specific printer. Evolis ribbons aren't interchangeable with Fargo ribbons, and even within a brand, different models use different ribbon types.
  • Inspect your blank cards. Cheap or poorly stored cards can have rough edges or surface contamination that snags the ribbon.
Prevention: Store ribbons and cards in their sealed packaging until you need them. Dust and humidity are the enemies here.

3. Card Jams

The card feeds in but gets stuck partway through — or doesn't feed at all.

What's happening: Usually a dirty or worn feed roller, cards that are stuck together, or a card that's warped or out of spec. Fix it:
  • Remove the jammed card carefully. Don't force it — you can damage the printhead or transport mechanism.
  • Clean the feed rollers with a cleaning card. Rollers get a film of dust and plasticiser over time that makes them lose grip.
  • Fan your card stack before loading. New cards from a sealed pack sometimes stick together, especially in humid conditions.
  • Check card thickness. Most printers handle 0.76mm (30 mil) standard cards. If you're using thicker cards, check your printer's specs.
Prevention: Keep the feed rollers clean and don't overfill the hopper. A stack of 100 cards sitting in the hopper for weeks will settle and stick.

4. Blank or Faded Output

The card comes out but the print is barely visible — washed out, patchy, or completely blank.

What's happening: This usually points to a ribbon issue or a printhead that's not making proper contact with the card. Fix it:
  • Check the ribbon. Is it loaded correctly? Has it advanced past the leader section? Some ribbons have a clear leader at the start that needs to be wound past before printing begins.
  • Try a fresh ribbon. Ribbons that have been sitting open for months can degrade — the dye panels dry out and lose transfer capability.
  • Run a cleaning cycle. A dirty printhead can't transfer heat evenly, which causes patchy output.
  • Check your print driver settings. If the intensity or darkness is turned right down, the output will look faded.
Prevention: Use ribbons within a reasonable timeframe after opening. Don't stockpile open ribbon cassettes.

5. Colour Shifts or Wrong Colours

Your cards are printing but the colours look off — too blue, too yellow, or with a visible colour band in the wrong place.

What's happening: The ribbon panels are out of sync with the card position. Each colour panel (cyan, magenta, yellow, black, overlay) needs to align precisely. If the registration drifts, colours print in the wrong spot. Fix it:
  • Remove and reseat the ribbon cassette. Make sure it clicks into place and the ribbon is taut.
  • Run your printer's built-in calibration or alignment routine — check your printer's manual for the specific steps.
  • Try a different ribbon from a fresh box. Occasionally a ribbon roll has a manufacturing defect.
Prevention: Use genuine ribbons designed for your printer. Third-party ribbons can save a few quid but often cause registration and colour issues. We stock ribbons for all the major brands — Magicard, Zebra, Evolis, and Fargo.

6. Error Codes and Blinking Lights

The printer shows an error code on its display — or if it doesn't have a display, an LED is flashing a pattern you don't recognise.

What's happening: Error codes vary wildly by manufacturer and model, so there's no single answer here. Common ones include: cover open, ribbon not detected, card not detected, mechanical fault, and communication error. Fix it:
  • Check the obvious first — is the cover fully closed? Is the ribbon seated? Is there a card jammed inside?
  • Power cycle the printer. Turn it off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on. This clears transient errors more often than you'd expect.
  • Look up the specific error code in your printer's manual or the manufacturer's support site.
  • If you're getting a "ribbon not detected" error with a ribbon clearly installed, clean the ribbon sensor with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.
Prevention: Keep your printer's firmware updated. Manufacturers occasionally fix false-positive error detection in firmware updates.

7. Dirty or Speckled Prints

The card prints with visible specks, spots, or small imperfections scattered across the surface.

What's happening: Dust or debris inside the printer, on the cards, or on the ribbon. Direct-to-card printers are surprisingly sensitive to particles because the printhead sits fractions of a millimetre from the card surface. Fix it:
  • Clean the entire print path — printhead, rollers, and card feed area. A full cleaning kit is the way to go here.
  • Check your cards. Are they stored in a dusty environment? Are you handling them with bare hands? Fingerprints and dust on the card surface will show up on the print.
  • Make sure the printer's dust cover or lid stays closed when not in use.
Prevention: Store blank cards sealed until needed. Handle them by the edges. Keep your printer in a clean, dry area away from heavy foot traffic.

When It's More Than a Quick Fix

Most of the faults above can be resolved with cleaning and correct supplies. But if you've tried everything and the problem persists — especially persistent streaks after cleaning, or mechanical grinding noises — it may be time for a printhead replacement or a service.

Give us a call and we can help you figure out whether it's a supplies issue, a maintenance job, or something more. We stock ribbons and consumables for all the major printer brands, and we're happy to help you troubleshoot over the phone.
