Choosing ribbons for the Datacard SD160

The SD160 is a direct-to-card printer that many Irish offices bought for one job, usually staff ID or membership cards, and kept because it never gave them a reason to replace it. Two ribbons keep it running, and the choice between them is the same one every card printer poses: colour or monochrome.

The 534100-001 YMCKT is the full-colour ribbon. Yellow, magenta, cyan and black panels, plus a T for topcoat, the clear protective layer Datacard and Entrust use where other brands say overlay. It gives 250 prints and is the ribbon for photo ID. The 532000-056 black ribbon gives 1,500 prints, six times as many, and is the one for visitor passes, asset labels, loyalty cards and anything else made of text and barcode. Prices start from €87 ex VAT.

The cost-per-card gap between the two is wide enough that many SD160 users keep both and switch ribbons depending on the batch. The printer copes with that without complaint.

Cards, cleaning and the wider Entrust range

Both ribbons print on standard 760 micron blank white cards. Because the topcoat protects the print, a cleaning card from the printer cleaning kits at each ribbon change is the main maintenance the SD160 asks for.
