Choosing Datacard SD360 ribbons: YMCKT colour or monochrome black

Datacard writes its panel codes slightly differently from everyone else, and it trips people up. Where other brands end a colour ribbon in O for overlay, Datacard ends it in T for topcoat. YMCKT is the same idea: yellow, magenta, cyan, black, and a clear protective layer on top. Once you know that, the SD360 ribbon range makes sense.

The SD360 is a dual-sided printer found in Irish hospitals, universities and larger offices, and the ribbons here cover its two ways of working. For colour cards there is the 534700-004-R010 YMCKT at 500 prints, €206 ex VAT, which replaced the earlier 534000-003 part number, and the 534000-002 YMCKT at 250 prints, €191 ex VAT, for lighter use. For cards where the design is pre-printed and the printer only adds a name or barcode, the 532000-056 black ribbon prints 1,500 cards from a single roll, from €87 ex VAT. The 534000-003 colour kit still listed is specified for the older SP printer range.

What to look for when choosing an SD360 ribbon

  • Layout against cost. Colour on both sides uses two sets of panels, so a 500-print ribbon yields 250 two-sided cards.
  • Monochrome where you can. If the whole card is black on a pre-printed background, the 532000-056 is a fraction of the cost per card.
  • Part number history. If your last order said 534000-003 for an SD printer, the 534700-004-R010 is its replacement.

What does YMCKT mean on a Datacard ribbon?

Yellow, magenta, cyan, black and topcoat. The topcoat is Datacard's name for the clear overlay that protects the print, so YMCKT is the equivalent of YMCKO on other brands.

Which ribbon prints the most cards on an SD360?

The 532000-056 black ribbon, at 1,500 prints. It is the right choice when cards are pre-printed in colour and the SD360 only adds details.
