Choosing ribbons for a Datacard SP25 card printer

The SP25 is the compact Datacard printer that a good number of Irish credit unions, schools and small offices bought for membership and ID cards, and it is still doing that job in plenty of them. It is a single-sided machine, so its ribbon needs are simple: colour for photo cards, black for everything else. What matters is getting the right Datacard code, because Datacard uses its own naming and an SD-range ribbon will not do.

The 534000-002 YMCKT colour ribbon prints 250 full-colour cards: yellow, magenta, cyan and black panels, then a T topcoat that seals the print, Datacard's version of the overlay other brands call O. The 532000-056 black ribbon prints 1,500 cards of plain text and barcodes. For a credit union printing member cards with a photo, the YMCKT is the one; for a school printing library or locker cards, the black ribbon does it for a few cent each.

That puts colour at about 76 cent a card and black at under 6 cent. Many SP25 owners keep both in rotation: colour for new members, black for replacements and temporary cards. Ribbons start from €87 ex VAT and dispatch from Dublin.

Cards, cleaning and other Datacard ribbons

Print onto blank white cards and run a cleaning kit through the SP25 at every ribbon change; an older printer collects dust in the card path and it shows as faint lines across the print. If you have more than one Datacard model, the SP35 ribbons and SP55 ribbons are listed separately, and every code across the SP and SD ranges is under Entrust Datacard ribbons. When the SP25 retires, the current printers are under Entrust Datacard printers, in stock across Ireland.

What does YMCKT mean on a Datacard ribbon?

Yellow, magenta, cyan and black panels followed by a T topcoat. The topcoat is a clear protective layer, the same idea as the O overlay in other brands' YMCKO ribbons.

Will an SD-range Datacard ribbon fit the SP25?

No. The SD and SP ranges use different codes. The 534000-002 and 532000-056 are the SP25 codes; check your old cartridge and ring us if it differs.

How many cards does one SP25 colour ribbon print?

250 for the 534000-002 YMCKT. Rejected cards and reprints count against that, so a batch of 250 new members will need a little headroom.
