Choosing a Datacard SP55 ribbon

The Datacard SP range, the SP25, SP35, SP55 and SP75, was the printer family a great many Irish organisations bought when they first moved to in-house photo ID, and the SP55 in particular is still running in hospitals, councils and colleges. The ribbons it takes are the YMCKT colour kits, and both yields are stocked in Dublin from €191 ex VAT.

Datacard does one thing differently from every other brand: the last panel is called T for topcoat rather than O for overlay. It does the same job, a clear protective layer over the printed image, so YMCKT is the Datacard name for a standard full-colour ribbon.

SP55 ribbons: what to look for

  • Datacard 534000-002 YMCKT colour ribbon, 250 prints. The smaller kit, suited to a printer that issues a few cards a week.
  • Datacard 534000-003 YMCKT ribbon colour kit, 500 prints, for use on the SP printer range. The larger kit, and the lower cost per card for a busier SP55.
  • Yields are single-sided colour cards. A dual-sided SP55 printing colour on both faces uses two sets of panels per card, so halve the figure.

Cards, cleaning and related Datacard ribbons

The SP55 prints on standard CR80 blank white cards, and a cleaning kit at every ribbon change matters more on an older printhead. The same 534000 series covers the SP35 ribbons and SP75 ribbons, while the later SD range, such as the SD260 ribbons, uses different part numbers. Which ribbon does a Datacard SP55 use?

The YMCKT colour kits, 534000-002 for 250 prints and 534000-003 for 500 prints. Both are for use on the SP printer range.

What does YMCKT mean on a Datacard ribbon?

Yellow, magenta, cyan, black and topcoat. It is the same as YMCKO on other brands, with Datacard's name for the clear protective panel.

Will an SD260 ribbon fit an SP55?

No. The SD range uses a different cartridge and part number. If you have upgraded, order from the SD pages instead.
