Choosing the right Datacard SP35 ribbon

The Datacard SP35 is one of those printers that refuses to retire. It was sold into Irish credit unions, colleges and council offices well over a decade ago, it prints a perfectly serviceable single-sided colour card, and the sensible thing to do with one that still works is to keep feeding it ribbon. The two ribbons listed here are the Datacard YMCKT colour kits for the SP printer range: part 534000-002 for 250 prints and part 534000-003 for 500 prints.

YMCKT is the Datacard panel layout, now carried on under the Entrust name: yellow, magenta, cyan and black print the image, and the T panel lays a topcoat over it so the card survives daily handling.

250 or 500 prints: what to look for

  • 534000-002 YMCKT, 250 prints, from about €191 ex VAT: the right size for a site that prints colour cards a few times a month.
  • 534000-003 YMCKT colour kit, 500 prints, from about €347 ex VAT: the same ribbon at twice the length and a lower cost per card, for batch printing at enrolment or renewal time.
  • Both are listed for the SP printer range, so check the model plate if you are not certain it is an SP35, and use a cleaning card at every ribbon change.

Compatibility with the wider Datacard and Entrust range

The SP series printers have their own pages, so the SP25 and SP55 listings are the places to look if your printer plate says something other than SP35, and the later SD series, such as the SD260, is listed separately. All of it sits under Entrust Datacard ribbons. The SP35 prints onto standard 760 micron blank white cards, and a printer cleaning kit is worth keeping alongside a printer of this age.

Frequently asked questions

Are Datacard SP35 ribbons still available in Ireland?

Yes. Both the 250 and 500 print YMCKT ribbons are in stock and dispatch from Dublin, so an SP35 that is still in good order can carry on printing.

What is the difference between the 534000-002 and 534000-003?

Length only. The -002 prints 250 colour cards and the -003 prints 500. Both are YMCKT ribbons for the SP printer range.

Is a Datacard ribbon the same as an Entrust ribbon?

Datacard became Entrust Datacard and then Entrust, so the same consumables now appear under either name. The part number is what matters, whichever brand is on the box.
