Choosing a Fargo DTC1500 for everyday ID cards

The Fargo DTC1500 is the printer for an organisation that has outgrown the occasional badge but does not need a machine running all day. A secondary school printing a year group each September, a company of two or three hundred staff, a leisure centre issuing membership cards: these are the buyers who settle on it across Ireland. It is a direct-to-card printer, so it prints straight onto standard PVC through a ribbon, and it is listed here in single-sided form at €1,791 ex VAT.

Where it sits in the Fargo range is the useful thing to know. Below it is the DTC1250e, the entry-level model. Above it is the DTC4500e, built for higher volumes and more options. The DTC1500 is the middle, and the middle is where most Irish buyers end up.

DTC1500 or its neighbours: what to look for

  • Volume. If you print under a few hundred cards a year, the DTC1250e will do. If you print thousands, look at the DTC4500e.

  • Encoding. Magnetic stripe and contactless encoding are factory options, so decide before ordering rather than after.
