Choosing a Fargo DTC4500e for a busy ID office

The DTC4500e sits at the top of Fargo's direct-to-card range, and it is bought by organisations that have outgrown a desktop printer without wanting to move to retransfer. Hospitals in Ireland that issue and re-issue staff cards all year, universities with a card office, security firms and local authorities: the people for whom the printer is infrastructure, not a peripheral on the receptionist's desk.

Three configurations are listed. The single-sided DTC4500e for cards where everything is on the front. The dual-sided DTC4500e, which prints both faces in one pass. And the dual-sided DTC4500e with dual-sided lamination, which applies a protective overlaminate to both faces as the card leaves the printer. The decision is card life. If cards are replaced yearly anyway, the plain dual-sided machine is enough. If replacing a card means a trip to Dublin for a photo, or the card carries a hologram, the laminating version stops the print wearing off before the card does.

Single-sided, dual-sided or laminating: what to look for

  • Sides printed. A dual-sided printer flips the card internally, so a name on the front and a barcode on the back needs no manual handling.
  • Lamination. An overlaminate adds abrasion and UV resistance and makes tampering obvious, which matters for access cards.
  • Pricing for all three builds is on request by phone, as encoding options are added to order.

What is the difference between the DTC4500e and the DTC4250e?

The DTC4500e is the higher-volume machine with larger card capacity and a lamination option. The DTC4250e is a lighter duty printer without lamination.

Do I need the laminating version?

If the card is swiped daily, worn outdoors or expected to last three years or more, yes. For visitor passes and cards re-issued annually, the standard dual-sided model is enough.

Can the DTC4500e encode magnetic stripe or smart cards?
