Choosing a Fargo DTC4250e for a busy card programme

The DTC4250e is the Fargo printer that turns up in Irish hospitals, universities and larger companies: organisations that issue cards every week, not every September, and want a printer that will take dual-sided printing and encoding without moving to a retransfer machine. It prints directly onto standard PVC, and both versions are listed here, the single-sided from €1,420 ex VAT and the dual-sided priced on request by phone.

The decision between them is the one that matters. A dual-sided printer will happily print single-sided cards, so the question is whether the back of the card will ever need to carry emergency contacts, terms of use or a barcode. If it might, buy the dual-sided model now rather than flipping cards by hand later.

Single or dual-sided DTC4250e: what to look for

  • Single-sided. Staff photo IDs, membership cards and visitor passes where everything is on the front.
  • Dual-sided. Both faces in one pass, using a YMCKOK ribbon with a second black panel for the back.
  • Encoding. Magnetic stripe and contactless encoding are factory options on either version; decide before ordering.
  • Connection. Sharing the printer across a department is easier over the network than from one desk, so check the connection options on the listing.
