Choosing a Magicard Rio ribbon

The original Magicard Rio was the printer that put photo ID cards on the desks of Irish schools, clubs and small companies long before the Rio Pro or the 300 series arrived, and a fair number are still in service. Rio ribbons are still stocked in Dublin alongside the rest of the Magicard range.

The choice is the usual one for a card printer: full colour for photo IDs, or monochrome for text and barcodes on pre-printed cards.

Colour or monochrome: what to look for

  • YMCKO colour ribbons print a full-colour front with a clear overlay panel that protects the image from wear.
  • Black monochrome ribbons print text and barcodes at a fraction of the cost per card, with yields in the hundreds or low thousands.
  • Cleaning. An older printhead is more sensitive to dust, so run a cleaning card at every ribbon change.

Cards, cleaning and the later Magicard ranges

The Rio prints on standard CR80 blank white cards, and a cleaning kit keeps an old printer printing. If your printer is a later model, the Rio Pro ribbons and Rio Pro 360 ribbons are separate and do not interchange, and the Tango ribbons cover the dual-sided sibling of the same era. Frequently asked questions

Which ribbon does a Magicard Rio use?

The Rio has its own ribbon part numbers, distinct from the Rio Pro. Check the label on your last cartridge, or call with the printer model and we will confirm it.

Will a Rio Pro ribbon fit the original Rio?

No. The cartridges differ, and the printer will not recognise a ribbon made for a later model.

Are Rio ribbons still available in Ireland?

Yes. We keep them for the Irish customers still running these printers, with fast dispatch from Dublin.
